Yearly, The lighthouse attracts around 20,000 visitors. But visiting the beautiful place comes with a challenge as the 5 buildings are located on a separate little rocky island, and to get there you have to deal with the tides. That means you have to wait until upto 25ft of water have vanished exposing a gravel bar, thus offering a way to walk over to said island. This always happens about 2 hours before the lowest tide and lasts for 4hours. With other words, one has to get back before the water is again washing across the gravel bar. Also you have to balance your body along a narrow trail between rocks and slippery seaweeds. To make that trip a bit safer the "Friends of the Head Harbour Lightstation" are offering a collection of walking sticks at the ticket kiosk. Volunteers of the association have worked hard over the years to repair and staff the lightstation. </span></b></p></b><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>When the summer visitors are coming over there are usually knowledgeable volunteers at hand to tell the story of the lightstation.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>One day, a couple of years ago, 2 elderly ladies volunteering, were taking a rest on a bench. They had been busy with a variety of maintenance issues and were now just immersed in enjoying the peace and beautiful view across the bay. A lady from Michigan was also on site and the last visitor that day. She too was still admiring the surroundings, when one of the volunteers suddenly shouted: "Oh gosh, the gull has left the rock, we have to rush back". They quickly informed the Michigan lady about what was going on preparing for their hasty departure.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>That day, the 3 ladies got their feet wet. Some places in Canada have received their first major snowfall. But we are lucky to be on Campobello. The temps are in the mid-sixties with summer temps in the sunshine.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">We are on the trail to Sunsweep Sculpture. A narrow winding trail following the edge of the rocky cliffs from Liberty Point. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Herring Cove Beach has its name for a reason, and local fishermen are still setting up a herring weir to trap the "silver of the sea". It were the local Indians of the Quoddy Tribe, who first taught settlers how to fish for herring from land.</span><br />
<img alt="Picture" height="428" src="https://herringheritage.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/3/3/12337010/6812868.jpeg?279" width="640" /><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Being the lonely wanderer, you can let your thoughts fly out to the horizon and beyond. The sea is friendly today but you know it can get wild. You can return in January and watch the storm waves rolling ashore. You will still be the lonely wanderer.</span><br />

"It's still foggy", you think. "Didn't the weather man speak of clear sunshine today?"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">And after your breakfast you venture out, in my case with our dog. You drive down to Southern Head and you can hardly see the road in front of you.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYO-0PSjMy_gm3i8aQyCYsOoPLddifiaamNSyeWYSrCEMmAHf8PV1fsON0bYVFx3y5alAaYmQ5cZdV8LkOwCRzD0hA9haMLVfGVQH0brKmKqC6D93B0Y4b0Ef-sjxun0islcjMZRxADXt-/s1600/20150929_055358.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYO-0PSjMy_gm3i8aQyCYsOoPLddifiaamNSyeWYSrCEMmAHf8PV1fsON0bYVFx3y5alAaYmQ5cZdV8LkOwCRzD0hA9haMLVfGVQH0brKmKqC6D93B0Y4b0Ef-sjxun0islcjMZRxADXt-/s640/20150929_055358.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">But nearing the beach you notice this slight golden light behind all that fog. A ray of hope - maybe. Of course, my dog doesn't care. She ventures along, sniffing here and there, picking up a plastic bottle and buries it in the soft sand. Rounding Southern Head we are looking down Raccoon Beach. I start picking up some round stones. They are wet and their colours are just beautiful.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Suddenly my dog let's out one of her deep growls. She is looking out towards the water. What's there? I can't hear anything. There seems to be just fog. But she isn't letting up.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">There! Now I can hear a splash. Something moves in the water. A seal? Or did she hear the distant blow-out from a whale?</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuvOCBVDuZPwPnQQAgtJegq0sl_G5YA71Z7vlM65yk5S_69FAKCAjj2GkkVRo0M5AZCDqPwmsRWRG__zQtzDskd7S2fCRcJGZ57HukGOykYfdk-_ii4QW3GnRlgNSD7zfnzoMXVdnG8PQP/s1600/20150929_061015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuvOCBVDuZPwPnQQAgtJegq0sl_G5YA71Z7vlM65yk5S_69FAKCAjj2GkkVRo0M5AZCDqPwmsRWRG__zQtzDskd7S2fCRcJGZ57HukGOykYfdk-_ii4QW3GnRlgNSD7zfnzoMXVdnG8PQP/s640/20150929_061015.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">It's too foggy to find out for sure, but Dixie listens intently. She even barks a bit.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOqeahRBwRDnn2NbunQTYftaLxspBzUNOOFdebjk8aZz558gBMthptzwp9bZpPR5Ytqmfs6HSx9QaYF29Z2JovWnLp7EPrMS13arbP7EVUL6CMualobh9kMBcZzRX6xl8TB-FaRpO6H3ss/s1600/20150929_061319.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOqeahRBwRDnn2NbunQTYftaLxspBzUNOOFdebjk8aZz558gBMthptzwp9bZpPR5Ytqmfs6HSx9QaYF29Z2JovWnLp7EPrMS13arbP7EVUL6CMualobh9kMBcZzRX6xl8TB-FaRpO6H3ss/s640/20150929_061319.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Finally, calming down, Dixie takes up checking out the crab shells again, and we begin our return walk. Suddenly I feel a slight breeze. It's the Northwest the weather forecast had predicted. A soft sunshine appears on the cliff side. </span><br />

In a matter of moments, the fog moves off Deep blue water appears across the cove. The beach - light brown with a slight yellow tinge. It's low tide now. Soon it will turn again and 25ft of water will again wash over this beautiful beach. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432364502774711608.post-48726586927817393472019-08-02T02:44:00.001-07:002019-08-02T02:44:26.634-07:00Summer On The Island<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>It is safe to say that Campobello is currently having a great summer. Even though the Bay of Fundy is still the big natural air conditioner, island visitors have been enjoying record-breaking temperatures. Yes, there is some fog some mornings, but that's to be expected, as all that warm air moving up from the south also carries a lot of moisture, which turns into fog when layered over the cold water of the bay. But fog is also beautiful.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: x-large;">You may be coming from a big city or the great plains of the midwest. You may live in the mountains, a desert or in the deep woods. It'll all be different from coming here to the shores of Campobello Island, where nature is dominated by the North Atlantic ocean. Oh, it can be very gentle but also very rough. I know you'd be looking for sunshine and maybe a gentle breeze, and more than often we enjoy that kind of beautiful weather. But there are days when the winds pick up bringing dark clouds and rain, or the fog rolls in from the south swallowing the island. But regardless of what kind of surprise nature will offer to you, keep in mind that it will change again quickly. A grey morning doesn't mean the sun won't be out again in the afternoon. Speaking of the sun, you ought to see our sunsets. Take a boat ride at sunset or just sit at the Pier Waterfront Restaurant and watch the sun go down. Or we can get you up to Friar's Head from where the sunsets are spectacular. </span></b></span><br />

Poets have tried, some have been more fortunate than others. Luckily, there are cameras today, so we can show pictures. But even pictures can miss their goal. So best way to see the natural beauty of Campobello Island is come and visit. And as many of our guests have said: Get a local to show you around. And that's precisely what Campobello Sightseeing has done for 7 years. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Let me introduce you to one of our most natural beaches, the one around lower Duck Pond. It's not a groomed beach. In the contrary, you will have to step over round and rolling rocks until your legs can relax on smoother ground. Your views will be filled with strewn-around drift wood, with old tree stumps and some dead tree trunks at the edge of the forest. And you can look across to Maine and a fishing boat may pass along. Seabirds and songbirds will be bountiful along your walk. Have you seen the little lake behind the beach? Ducks paddle around there, well that's before the ice covered it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">It's November 24 when we take our dog along here. One more month to Christmas Eve. The last days have been blistering cold, but today the sun is out, it's way above freezing and we have dressed too warm. A slight sea breeze greets us as we venture along. I pick up a round rock, it's smaller than a golf ball, and entirely round. The works of nature. </span><br />

Daily, hundred thousands of tons of plastic garbage is dumped into the oceans, where it is (very slowly) falling apart. It crumbles up into minuscule parts ending up in the bellies of marine wildlife. Gulls, whales, dolphins and all fish are "eating" plastic. Plastic is filling their digestive tracts making it impossible for real food to pass through. The results are deadly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Every beach, every coastline is today polluted with plastic articles. Plastic bottles, shards of plastic and pieces of Styrofoam are common finds along the coast. Much of that is going to re-enter the ocean with the tides and winter storms.</span><br />

You wake up one morning, and you are greeted by a dark blue sky and a blinding white landscape, the blue sea contrasting in the background. It is a transformation which needs to be experienced. It is not often it happens, but when it does everybody is out and about. We went to the beach, then followed a forest trail finishing off with a visit to Head Harbour Lightstation. Our pics are only inspirations. They will never give you the full idea. For that, you gotta come here. The motel is available and at the recently established </b><b>Sally Anne's Cafe in Lubec you can enjoy a great breakfast from 6am, if you are up that early. </b></span><br />

Beaches are beautiful regardless of what time of the year you are visiting. And the best proof of that we can find along Herring Cove Beach. Here, where the sandy seashore is meeting the fresh-water Lake Glensevern with the forest of the Herring Cove Provincial Park as a backdrop, you will find a great variety of different types of landscape. Eagles are soaring high over rocky coastline, sandy beach, lake and forest. Not far from here one can wander along Eagle Hill Bog where rare plants are getting their nutrients out of the water, instead of the soil. A nd have you ever seen Gibraltar Rock, halfway over to the Roosevelt Natural park area? The trail can be started on either end und once you walked the entire length, you might want to return along the beach.<br><br>Winter is such a wonderful time here. You will find beautiful clamp shells and the rocks are soooo smooth, - you will fill you pockets in no time. Of course, if you give us a call ahead of your visit we will be happy to guide you along, not only here at Herring Cove, but over the entire island. And remember, you can stay overnight at the <a href="http://peacockhouse.com">Peacock House</a> B+B in lovely Lubec and even get full meals there. Why not try it out? Come right over in the new year and enjoy the island.<br><br><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j2mX-ln8tMY/WjAnr3fXgAI/AAAAAAAACUk/_Oy0GBRhPvINUz8Aacvp-Gjjpo3foBOgwCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_01715"><img title="1-DSC_0171" style="float: none; margin: 10px auto; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0171" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--97KF6yhOFk/WjAnsfkVXbI/AAAAAAAACUo/gXsxbPJSWDk31atCMmvuKEklWWCzTcfmwCHMYCw/1-DSC_0171_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="400"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J9dI7iBlSKw/WjAntYNXYWI/AAAAAAAACUs/WhfYQquFKyMLjs8gZHP8pi9d14nspwttgCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_01725"><img title="1-DSC_0172" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="1-DSC_0172" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0nixjtFipCY/WjAnuPOXmyI/AAAAAAAACUw/nCuw9Ye73f4S7ILJ3D8YQcMyD_6EoieqgCHMYCw/1-DSC_0172_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="400"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3juP4JIdgxY/WjAnwKieWqI/AAAAAAAACU8/TCjfWabLY-85FO9TG806RBSJq5ms4IJoACHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_01766"><img title="1-DSC_0176" style="float: none; margin: 19px auto 10px; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0176" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RXDCnOZwOzg/WjAnwmHaJQI/AAAAAAAACVA/DwKI3L-dWnAFFHRh3Xz2NAAUErddJUTKQCHMYCw/1-DSC_0176_thumb3?imgmax=800" width="601" height="300"><font size="3"></a> <font color="#0000ff">Above: View to Herring Cove Golf Course Restaurant</font><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BVrOj4V7hkw/WjAnxVp6aQI/AAAAAAAACVE/7vOSom7ScaohBFGve_lB-y9Wen44x7n1ACHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_0202"></font><img title="1-DSC_0202" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="1-DSC_0202" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aCaUo1VIFR8/WjAnxwR4-bI/AAAAAAAACVI/1Eex1XGjvHYPBZyA7kyryR8Y-ODi2KZ7gCHMYCw/1-DSC_0202_thumb?imgmax=800" width="600" height="305"></a><img title="1-DSC_0210" style="float: none; margin: 10px auto; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0210" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--7TSrqMqJh4/WjAnyhjDd5I/AAAAAAAACVM/ysbQxcl-GLkybvRg1Fy1nU6yVVM8D3KZgCHMYCw/1-DSC_0210_thumb?imgmax=800" width="600" height="362"> <p align="center"><font color="#0000ff" size="3">On the hill: Herring Cove Golf Course</font></p> <p align="center"><font color="#0000ff" size="3">Below: Outlet of Lake Glensevern</font><br><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ib0MWF3r49w/WjAnzSW-HXI/AAAAAAAACVQ/PONqMzfApRcvQWI1VRPWwm1aCP0q71w2gCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_0215"><img title="1-DSC_0215" style="margin: 0px 0px 0px 19px; display: inline" alt="1-DSC_0215" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mmTllf3SnM8/WjAnz_yUzgI/AAAAAAAACVU/I4qV5Dx-_AsjZRMSL6roWeRmWmlHXwXHwCHMYCw/1-DSC_0215_thumb?imgmax=800" width="600" height="375"></a><br></p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P-4gJUiET7w/WjAn0fqqidI/AAAAAAAACVY/BTGVRJsrO-gvz45N52Ip_VhvVlkUsGKwQCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_0184"><img title="1-DSC_0184" style="float: none; margin: 10px auto 0px; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0184" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y3YvoEYDF1k/WjAn06NmrTI/AAAAAAAACVc/TpSRHRgBPQYvT-_vhMhnPhAnf5zWkBnVwCHMYCw/1-DSC_0184_thumb?imgmax=800" width="600" height="178"></a></strong></font> <font color="#0000ff" size="3"><strong>Grand Manan on the horizon</strong></font></td></tr></tbody></table>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432364502774711608.post-23955276332051538802017-12-04T16:18:00.001-08:002017-12-04T16:25:04.683-08:00A Little Town South Of The Border<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="1" width="650" border="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td valign="top" width="650"><font size="5" face="Arial"><strong><font size="6">T</font>here is no doubt about that the heydays of Lubec,ME are long gone, and there is no better time for that realization than if you walk Water Street on a chilly day in December. The style of the commercial buildings long Water Street, speaks of the good old days, and Lubecers are genuinely proud of their pretty little town.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zfzEUdfigP4/WiXlonb5UPI/AAAAAAAACTI/ShCN-7X29Tk70ocPRVoi-wHg8d06gwN_gCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_00115"><img title="1-DSC_0011" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="1-DSC_0011" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZjaJMwJGi-o/WiXlprFaBVI/AAAAAAAACTM/NXZT0Rzy2ZMWI4H-Mr-AN9WMIMv8KOeOgCHMYCw/1-DSC_0011_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="402"></a><font color="#ffc000" size="3"><br><font color="#0000ff" size="4">Below: Frank’s Dockside Restaurant great place to eat, but closed today.</font></font><br><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GcRPfwBcCBk/WiXlqeN9fMI/AAAAAAAACTQ/x3iwc5jLprM02VlZxVf9eDGRJIrRlrLeACHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_00145"><img title="1-DSC_0014" style="float: none; margin: 11px auto 0px; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0014" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EfCYhp_iyEE/WiXlq6eBdHI/AAAAAAAACTU/5U3FSVoxK3YjQsI0wwGs-g4NgkThttOeACHMYCw/1-DSC_0014_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="500" height="333"></a><br><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Emwet6_H4Ag/WiXlro9YbcI/AAAAAAAACTY/kpsE2bzXt8YieuDLd4D62vagZ8vFzjx2QCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_00175"><img title="1-DSC_0017" style="float: none; margin: 11px auto 0px; display: block" alt="1-DSC_0017" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3O4ih6ElyiI/WiXlsHEoY2I/AAAAAAAACTc/7tRA8Ar6AB0rYKqOMBWjy6LKt_f-AICSwCHMYCw/1-DSC_0017_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="400"></a> <font color="#0000ff" size="4"> </font><font color="#0000ff" size="4">On Water Street<br></font>However, once being in town, I am swinging my camera here and there. When the salt-shacks, smoke houses and canneries closed, people lost their work and left town in search for a better life in a bigger place. What they left behind was boarded-up buildings and a sense of despair for those who remained in residence, mostly the older population.<br>Prior to the decline, there were 20 <a href="http://lubec.mainememory.net/page/637/display.html">smokehouses in Lubec</a> producing 50 to 60 thousand boxes of fish annually, bringing employment and prosperity to the town. In 1797, Daniel Ramsdell cured the first herring by smoke, a process of preserving fish he had learned in Nova Scotia. Lubec would become the national leader in smoked herring production. Smokehouses and the many brush weirs that supplied herring lined the shore. Weir construction also brought a measure of prosperity to area farmers who cut the necessary stakes and brush needed to build and refurbish the herring traps. So great was the demand for the large herring preferred by the smokehouses that Lubec began sending vessels to the Magdelen Islands in the quest for fish. The 1855 Maine Register reported: “During the 1850s it was said that the smoked herring business employed every male resident over the age of 10 in the Washington County town of Lubec.”<br>It’s hard to believe but due to increases in retail activity, fishing and fish processing employment opportunities, shipping and farming, Lubec’s population grew to 3,000 by 1850. The town boasted three post offices, four churches, several fraternal organizations including Freemasons, and a ferry connecting Lubec and Eastport. People migrated to the town in search of work and, with money to spend, shopped at the growing number of stores on Water Street.<br><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SSVU4p3QxB4/WiXlt6IwH_I/AAAAAAAACTo/8kMDzzNe0B0xZTxIv6whf5k5cNg0H3jFgCHMYCw/s1600-h/Lubec-seaside4"><img title="Lubec seaside" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="Lubec seaside" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0lJlWDfM-fw/WiXluaMy8QI/AAAAAAAACTs/fp2J77tlaj4Y1WXFZq3tQ3dPJt3nGl3bwCHMYCw/Lubec-seaside_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="405"></a> <font color="#0000ff" size="4">Ferry boat in 1936, Below: same place today<br></font><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bCXGL-yq3oU/WiXlvG_TtkI/AAAAAAAACTw/KkjKh6EWDb4FT3AgBGqJmi1y5iumK7iTwCHMYCw/s1600-h/1-DSC_00215"><img title="1-DSC_0021" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="1-DSC_0021" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WgeBoKwFzNo/WiXlvgGYN5I/AAAAAAAACT0/rV36eiLcFlIw6Vgn3hVWBn6G0A3nPdY1gCHMYCw/1-DSC_0021_thumb2?imgmax=800" width="600" height="300"></a>Following a period of decline during the Depression, World War II revitalized the industry with factories on both the east and west coasts working at capacity to supply the Army and Navy with three million, one-hundred can cases per year. Seven new factories were built in Lubec. With the end of the War demand for canned sardines decreased sharply and the overbuilt industry began to decline.
